of LEM Center.

People who read what others miss.

The people behind LEM Center share one belief: that a human being cannot be reduced to their symptoms. Our work is to understand the story behind them — with science, presence and direction.

We don't believe a human being can be reduced to a diagnosis. We believe in science, but also in presence. In diagnosis, but also in narrative.

Dr. João Vilas Boas

Psychiatrist · PhD

“Every symptom lives inside a story. And every person deserves to have that story read with precision, respect and depth.”

João Maria Vilas Boas is a Psychiatrist and PhD candidate in Psychology at ISPA (professional licence nº 63179). He holds an Integrated Master's in Medicine from the University of Porto, and has trained in reference institutions both in Portugal and internationally — building an integrated vision of the mind that goes well beyond pharmacological intervention.

From an early age, he developed a deep passion for understanding the workings of the human mind, and the way mental health shapes how we relate to ourselves and to the world.

What we believe
about good clinical care.

Our working principles that shape every clinical decision, every appointment, and every interaction at LEM Center.

The person before the diagnosis

A diagnosis is a useful tool. It is never the whole story. We always start with the person — their context, their history, their goals.

Listening as a clinical act

The quality of a clinician's attention is the foundation of the quality of their care. At LEM Center, listening is not a preamble to the work — it is the work.

Evidence without rigidity

We follow the evidence. We also know that the best clinical decisions require judgement, experience, and the ability to read what the research cannot yet capture.

Autonomy as the goal

Guidance exists to return agency — not to create dependency. The measure of good care is not how much someone needs us, but how well they eventually function without us.

Choose who you'd like
to begin with.

Not sure which specialist is right for you? That's what the first conversation is for. We'll guide you to the right fit — before anything else.
